Why I chose Ypsopump

Why I chose Ypsopump
After nearly 5 years with the Animas Vibe, I received a few days ago my new YpsoPump from Ypsomed from the postman in receipt. I had already posted some photos on our Facebook fanpage and there came immediately the question, why just the YpsoPump? The question is certainly right at first sight, because what do you want nowadays with a pump, which has no CGM connection and where the bolus calculator is missing. I will explain it to you all!

To one there is the emotional side. As we have already reported here several times, we have been involved in the development of the pump for over 4 years and therefore it was clear that I would like to wear the pump some time. But of course this has not been decisive. Here are my reasons for choosing the YpsoPump:

  • The size! This pump is small and is well in the hand.
  • The menu is 100% icon based and comes without font.
  • Touch screen
  • Pre-filled ampoules
  • Future-oriented: I am a fan of the fact that I can control everything in the future in my iPhone. Already, I have my Dexcom G5 CGM data on the iPhone and I think of Ypsomed that they see the same. I am 100% sure that I can use the pump at any time via an app. When this is going to happen, I can not say I hope as soon as possible. So I then have everything on the iPhone, pump control, CGM data, mySugr, Diasend as evaluation tool. If everything is still linked together, perfect.
  • The clear and straightforward design, almost a little Swedish.

Some will now say, "You can do almost everything with other pump manufacturers such as Medtronic or Animas?" That is true and if the YpsoPump was not on the market, I would definitely choose one of the other pumps. But I find it simply good and remarkable and gladly supports a manufacturer of us diabetics cooperates and that our opinion also finds hearing. There was no such thing as Dato yet.

What do you think about it? Can you understand my reasons? Finally, a few photos of the unpacking of the pump below.

How I survived without anything in 90 days

How I survived without anything in 90 days
Without insulin? Nope, of course not. Then I would not sit here in front of the computer with security. Without Nutella? Never! As some may already know, I cherish beside my little Nutella addiction also a certain dependency to Diet Coke. Which is better of two now, remains to be seen. But at least I wanted to get away somehow from one of the two consumption goods, or at least limit the consumption.

Whether Cola light (in fact all soft drinks) are really as harmful as claimed, why it should not go here. Healthy you are not sure. And I especially like the good advice of smokers who grimace torch in his hand, but the really want to tell me how dangerous it was Diet Coke for health. Hello? Find the error!

An alternative must be found
How do I get rid of the now so brown, sweet, caffeinated Blubber stuff?  I had already started several attempts to drink at least less of it. Less in my case is a bottle instead of two. Somehow that has never really works.  And somehow I honestly never felt particularly bad or guilty about it. What should you drink as a diabetic already large else that has no carbohydrates and therefore does not require insulin? Because for a drink I would never want to inject something. What now, then? Water? Correct! And what if you do not like water? Nope. I got me anyway always asked the question, how can something like what is virtually tasteless !? So for me, was as long as there is no alternative, as long as I enjoy my Diet Coke.

Start the Odyssey
To my Cola waiver it came faster than I ever thought, what in retrospect was a very good thing. Quasi the minute my colleague a few weeks ago at my table with the 2-liter bottle of it brushed past, and an appropriate comment could not resist. At that moment, which was created "nine weeks without" Challenge. Which meant to me no Diet Coke, for him no cigarettes (yes, such a fact!). So seen as the Challenge was actually more of a bet.

Before we knew it, we had taken, and my eyes fell slightly panicked at the bottle next to me. Urgs!  No matter. No weakness pretend and pretend you have the situation under control. So at least the plan.

The cruel cold withdrawal
The first three days were the horror! Headaches at its finest. Hello caffeine withdrawal.  Incidentally, I have decided to forced masses of water and tea as "Cola replacement". I thought I would have to Deit, Presta and can grab consorts back, but that would have made the matter is certainly not better. Finally, there are also only soft drinks, just not cola. And these drinks irritate me eh absolutely not.

So now passed so minutes, hours, days, weeks and finally months that I spent fed with water Cola. If I am completely honest, as really hard as I had thought it was not. The fact that the Challenge was virtually decided from one minute to the other, I think has helped a lot. So I had no time my thoughts, or even backtracked to make. Most things work anyway best if you push them into the deep end of times. In addition, of course, I did not want to splash out (and do not cook for the whole company, the wager namely).

Done - but something of
Yup! 9 weeks without even a single drop of Diet Coke. There were difficult situations, no question. For example, if the colleagues relish my beloved Fritz sugar free tipped up into the throat, if you were on the road at night and did not like standing at the counter with water, or simply if one of the "sweet and thirst" raided. The way, I have shown, in most cases the cold shoulder, or even satisfied with a glass of Fanta Light, but that was absolutely not satisfactory.

End of the Challenge
I had planned at the beginning of the challenge to make this day a nice ice-cold Diet Coke with pleasure flow through my lips. Which I did. Together with my Diet Coke Buddy Scott (coming namely also not get away from the stuff). But it was not relish. Seriously, I am almost frightened. Not because I found it pretty sweet, but rather that the taste was so terribly evil artificial, which I was never so aware of time. You will probably not believe me, but I have not even drunk my glass.

And now?
Next, I am planning a bathroom in Diet Coke to take to get back on the flavor.  Of course not! But I'm not saying that I will now drink no more Cola also. Because that would be a lie. A Jieper I have occasionally been still on the brown Blubber- shower, but what I find totally OK as long as I do not fall back into old habits returned.

Because actually it was really just a habit, and the good thing about habits is yes, they can be to unlearn.  By the way, I feel in everyday life no physical changes since I drink water instead of cola. From because of beautiful skin, energy uproot the trees and the whole shebang. Nope.  But I can now at Regal Cola with their heads held high pass...

The first week with the Dexcom G5

The first week with the Dexcom G5

Dexcom G5. It is now over a week ago, as the postman was standing with a package of Nintamed at the door and brought me the new Dexcom G5 for testing. I must confess that I was a little excited and so I had already charged me in advance the Dexcom app on my iPhone and looked a bit in the manual. You want to be prepared so. If the new transmitter and receiver you look so, so you can hardly see the Dexcom G4 a difference. The receiver is externally as the G4, the transmitter on the other hand has become a little bigger, he is as big as the "old" G4 transmitters. Dexcom justified this by saying that in the G5 more technology is installed.

The first steps! When you open the app for the first time you will be asked to sign in with his login information in Dexcom. But this is no effort and is quite fast. The account is probably something for the Americans, because you can there's sensors and transmitters purchased with Dexcom, but is mandatory. Once you've logged in, will be explained a what the app can do and how to be, for example, sets a sensor. A small Walkthrough quasi. Once you have this tour behind him, you will be prompted to connect the transmitter to the iPhone via Bluetooth. This process can take up to 30 minutes, with me went quite fast, after about 10 minutes was done.

Then place the 2-hour "warm-up" rather than, as you know well from Dexcom G4. After 2 hours, you have to enter 2 blood glucose levels for the calibration and the Dexcom G5 starts the CGM data to the app to send.

My conclusion after a week: It's very cool to have his CGM data on the iPhone. One can argue about the design and operation of the app because tastes are too different. It is not very fancy, but served its purpose. I wish for the future to me that, for example, .my diary can access app on the CGM data, hence my iPhone will be my personal "Central Command", about which I can control everything and examine and evaluate.

What has impressed me most is the accuracy. I was already very spoiled by Dexcom G4, but the Dexcom G5 is again a piece accurately. My deviation during calibration was never higher than 15mg / dl. What is really exciting, however, whether the insurance will pay the G5, or rather then the more favorable G4 grant (if any). On the Dexcom Share and the optional receiver I will discuss in a separate post yet.

Low Carb Cupcake - a serious experiment

Low Carb Cupcake - a serious experiment
Life should be enjoyed. To the fullest. This includes also for food. Carbohydrates. Gern many. So a plate of spaghetti, chocolate mousse or fruit salad have just kohlenhyratmäßig in itself. But that's me every f ** king bolus value.

Sometimes I let myself but happy times carried away by low carb food experiments. Will I not let it be said that I have at least not even tried it. So recently in Vienna. There is a bistro where no court on the map has more than 4g carbohydrates.

Sounds first not bad, and the food on offer look very delicious from. Of sweet I can hardly walk past, and so my decision was quite fast on a chocolate-chili Low Carb Cupcake. Low in price was the thing ever but unfortunately not. € 5 per piece. Nevertheless, I decided in addition to the Chocolate Cupcake also take the strawberry variant.

Hey, but quasi be something special at such a price, well the need. In addition, on one leg you can you know, are poor. With my two sweet achievements in bags so I am gezuckelt home and got the cupcakes first shipped in the refrigerator.

Low weight was the pastry incidentally not know what made me suspect immediately that the "whipped cream" it neither cream could be a fluffy cream upwards. How do I so am I first drilled the finger in the topping and before briefly to check consistency and taste. Actually quite ok.

Cupcake without carbohydrates
When I took the two heavyweights from the refrigerator later, unfortunately the consistency of the toppings had turned into a cut-resistant mass in the mouth almost like pure butter felt (buttercream?). Its taste but still ok. The base, so the actual cake was to indulge more than disappointing. Rather crumbly and dry, rather poor taste. Somehow went towards bread. Supposedly this almond flour was used. Sounds fancy, makes things but not better.

After half a cupcake I was pappsatt what do I clear on the back Topping. As I said, the taste was ok, but like a stone lay in the stomach. That reminds me of the guy at the counter assured that there in no case more than 4 g carbohydrates were in it, even less likely, I have not a drop of insulin injected for the entire feast and also squashed the second half. I wanted to know it! And indeed, my blood sugar seemed the chocolate chili miracle interested precious little. Was that a good sign? Can you see so and so.

Properly satisfied me that part definitely not, as it should be a cupcake, or food in general, do.

Conclusion: Can you make times. But does not have one. Only good for blood sugar levels I need definitely not low carb cupcake. Same blood sugar levels I would have certainly achieved also with a cupcake. Diabetes is learning. Every Day. I think those who understand the effects of insulin, for whom injection-meal interval is not a foreign concept and carbohydrates reasonably well calculated / can appreciate, the need not refrain. I was at least not convinced this sweet alternative. Since I need not fool me or sugarcoat.

The more I am me on my next visit to Vienna again on "Cupcakes Vienna" where I like to einkehre High Carb and Low price Sunday Cupcake.
