Diabetes also fills my free time

Diabetes also fills my free time
Sorry first that we have long not heard from us, we had a little more to the winter blues and were also very much on the move. Recently I was asked by a friend why I constantly trip to Rome in my world history, and that you'd only see me in connection with the diabetes blogger events. I had to swallow shortly, to think, only to realize that I really do very much about diabetes type 1 and which also plays most of my free time. What these bloggers events really are where we rumtreiben us regularly that you can in the latest report by Bente read. She stated there is very good. Especially that these events are not only for bloggers but all diabetics come in the end to Good.

As you may have already read, I'm our blog more in the background. I plan to organize and maintain our contacts. But what am I doing still so in the field of diabetes? Here is a brief overview of what we have so else for projects. Besides our blog where we somehow connected with it. Every last Thursday of the month meet the Hamburger diabetics in any hamburger restaurant or pub and chat, discuss or exchange ideas easily. The arose several years ago rather spontaneously to Hamburg Marathon and has continued until today. We are now quite a large, diverse group of Hamburg and Schleswig Holstein become that meets privately back often. This has resulted is the following project:

For the 4th time we will go with 2 teams in the running between the seas at the start. We are now a small organizing team, which is almost all year care that up to 35 diabetics have a great time for 3 days together. I'm looking person always throughout the year in this for 3 days. Look at our website: powered-by-insulin.com

Together with my friends Ilka, Tine and Sascha we make at least 1x in the diabetes blog week. The last two years have been such a great success that we will do well this year, at least one. It is always nice to see how put the individual blogs to the wheel and write very horny reports on various topics. As you can see, it is not just the blog. But why am I doing all this? The question is often asked me pretty and pretty easy to answer. I would like to move it! I want to be perceived that we type 1 diabetics in the general public. That drives me feels good.

Blood Sugar Test - satisfactory or rather a burden?

Blood Sugar Test - satisfactory or rather a burden?
In order regular blood glucose monitoring, we can not get around. Since the mouse bites from no thread. Because only when we know our glucose level, we can respond accordingly and act. Calculate the dose of insulin, plan activities, eating Nutella.  A good value encourages us in a bad blood sugar can make a sometimes quite thrown off track. Frustration, motivation lows, overwork. Diabetes can be exhausting. But who knows his blood sugar, is a clear advantage. For a day without blood glucose control is cut like blindfolded with a Japanese sushi knife. That is nothing. The more important is that we can rely on our measurement systems and can work well with them. Only with good, functioning and reliable gadgets at our side we can achieve good blood sugar control, and manage the diabetes optimally.

Quasi the Diabetes Sau show where to go. Whether blood glucose meter or CGM. In my opinion, the systems that we repeatedly have or use, be acting not only reliable but also easy day in the hand must. And ideally be also nice to look at. "Hand Erotic" as my former art teacher used to say. Ungern I would still believe in the web measurement brick of 20 years ago have to dig out.

Online survey on satisfaction with the glucose control
And because the glucose control is so important, we inevitably have to deal with on a daily basis so that we, I would like to put to you a small survey of a dear friend to my heart.  Melanie is itself Type 1 diabetic and research assistant at the Research Institute Fidam in Bad Mergentheim. Oh, and Medtronic Global Hero;.)

In the survey, it is about "satisfaction with the glucose control and diabetes-related burden in people with type 1 diabetes." It's just around me, you, all of us. Would be great if you could take 15-20 minutes of your time and at the study may contributes to influence the future of diabetes therapy.

Diabetes is "no big deal" - right?

Diabetes is "no big deal" - right?
Considering the species of pancreatic healthy, so I sometimes have the feeling that they differ in only 2 features. Some are curious and interested. Ask them what it means to have diabetes, why has diabetes, such as the treatment looks like and how it lives with it. I like them.

The other think diabetes is "no big deal". I do not like less therefore. They do not know otherwise. To be honest, diabetes is not a "big deal". But I can only say probably because I grew up with it, a lot of things that you are doing so every day (must do), are already long gone in flesh and blood.

Recently I was professionally a few interesting people. People who live their dream by helping other people here to realize their dreams. What does this have to do with diabetes? A quote of the "Dream Developer", which went something like this:

Just because I do not every day miserable if I do not know again how to pay my next purchases, which does not mean that it's not me busy. I invest my energy only not in the thought of it, but rather use them for something more meaningful.

The situation is similar with diabetes in my opinion. Just because I can not constantly miserable as stressful and sometimes grueling be or it constantly "showcase", that does not mean that everything is super easy and "No Big Deal". It does not help me to let me pull down thereby. The energy I can really use better.

I myself realize it though barely, but increases have diabetes every day a lot of time to complete. Time and effort, which does not implement the "No Big Deal" representatives. Especially the thought of it. Geplane and Gerechne often plagues the diabetes everyday ... Hey, after all, we have to take over the tasks of our diabetic pancreas, which has more or less decided sometime lay down their work. An ordinary day with diabetes looks to me something like this ...

Blood sugar plummeting at lofty heights

Blood sugar plummeting at lofty heights
That relaxation is a positive effect on blood sugar and already no secret in my Scotland trip in October I could clearly feel. After the Weihnachststress was over, I am more or less spontaneously decided to end of the year and to make even the beginning of the year to address a transition low. So rented hut, packed suitcase and from the mountains. No, not this time for skiing, but just relaxing and doing nothing. How the presents so ... snow hut on the mountainside, socks, books, cocoa ... .läuft!

Good, the arrival was a bit adventurous as always if one opts for the German course. And so I reached my destination after 11 hours, 2 hours later than planned. Well, the following days were more relaxed. Ausschalfen was definitely agenda item number 1. The rest was totally without a plan. Spontaneous precisely. Mainly relaxation.

Lo and behold, on the second day I was moderately constant blood sugar is plummeting, on the third and what I then set my Basal for the rest of the time down. What I did, however, significantly underestimated or forgotten ... Running in height is definitely strenuous than in the lowlands. Phew, now I've stayed 7 years in the mountains, but that I would get so out of breath, I had repressed in fact well. Anyway, the lap was refreshing. Mountains, freezing temperatures and snow. Wonderful.

Running in Schneeee
A few days later I started in bright sunshine in Mittenwald, hiked over to Leintal Lautersee, and from there up to the Kranzberg. 10km, 500 meters in altitude and all this without Hypo, let alone any of Extra BE. Secretly, I think yes, that the diabetes sow something quite Fieses in shields and feels now first to make a cuddly pig, and then eventually gets out the hammer. My average blood sugar over time in the mountains was the way 118mg / dl. Can I live with.

Walking in the snow - Juchee
What has incidentally not yet calmed down my skin. Once I had to take an antibiotic during the dental thing total almost 3 weeks, I see just like a pubescent teenager. Bravo. And the lady at the pharmacy said still to make matters worse, that it may take a few months until the skin recovers after antibiotic treatment. How motivating. Not!

# DBW2015 - What if the Easter Bunny had diabetes?

What if the Easter Bunny had diabetes?
# DBW2015 - What if the Easter Bunny had diabetes? Then that would be my opinion not so bad. Finally, the Easter Bunny is known like a sore thumb. And the Easter Bunny has coverage. You wonder sometimes what the Easter Sunday has the right for a tour, and from whom he meets everything.

DBW
So when the Easter Bunny had diabetes, he would take the opportunity to even afford a little reconnaissance work in terms of diabetes and put a few special notes in the Easter baskets of people. Before he goes to great tour, he of course still a little pimp his basal rate (ne pump. Eh clear, right?) To some comfortable walking shoes draws on Hoppel-feet and go to the Easter Marathon.

If the Easter Bunny had diabetes:

Then he would put all non-diabetics, the "etiquette for non-diabetics" into Easter
Then he would put all diabetics beside the finest chocolate (Nutella for me) a few CGM sensors with the Easter basket
he would trample all diet chocolate eggs
then he would say all journalists how to write correctly about diabetes
Then he would tell all the people that the word "Despite" regarding Diabetes is a completely superfluous word
he would in all candy packaging hide pieces of paper with the message that you get of NO type 1 diabetes
then he would explain all grandmas and grandpas with type 2 diabetes that the grandson with Type-1 well eating chocolates and drinking alcohol may
Then he would send all non-diabetics email this link and explain why diabetes goes far beyond a finger-Piks addition
he would not only paint the Easter eggs colorful, but also lay the same time manufacturers of blood glucose meters with a few colors in Nest
then all diabetics would get their chocolate eggs guidance on the calculation to FPE

Consistency pays off

Low Carb Cupcake - a serious experiment
Last weekend we went again to the beach. You know, there where the blood sugar levels usually are always totally dufte. Well, has this time not worked. Shortly before the walk on the beach I had nor measured. 200mg / dl. Since planned movement and was still eh insulin on board, I also leave it here, so no correction bolus.

So far everything fine. So we enjoyed the beach, the waves, the water, the wind. Sunfish, Hühnergötter collected, let the fresh breeze whistling around our ears. Life is Beautiful. Salt in the Air, sand in the hair). Ha!

Towards the end of the walk, however I noticed slight indisposition. Measured: 400mg / dl. Boom! Could actually only be connected to the pump. Checked catheter and Bingo. The fact was there. The needle had been so unfavorable caught in the clothes that I had not noticed, so no Piksen or so. Erstsatzkatheter this? Nope. Not this time. Simply forgot. Happens sometimes. But what I always have been doing is an emergency Pen or Daily Dose. The small mini syringes I know now increasingly appreciated because I have got used anyway to correct very high values with syringe or pen.

Even if I go for a run (at the moment rather rare) times without pump, then I take the with like. Because they are mini and light and can be pre-filling fine. Some might declare me crazy that I despite pump still a pen or syringes have been doing. I admit, very often these things do not come to use. But einenm day like this, I'm really glad that I am so consistently since (I habs also forget ever. With nasty consequences!). Having to walk around with 400mg / dl without insulin is namely absolutely no fun. Really!

CGM leg sensor - fine!

CGM leg sensor - fine!
This week was kind of exhausting. Both in general, as well as diabetes moderately. Regarding the saccharified companion, I could once again collect some experiences. Good, and less good. Let's start with the good experience in ...

Sensor leg runs like clockwork
I have set myself the first time the CGM sensor leg. I usually wear it so only the arm. An abdominal and flank it works for me is not really good and I finds also rather disturbing there. Granted, the arm is also not without its problems. Although he's going like clockwork, but many a doorway was the sensor already undoing. At first I was skeptical about the thigh. Pants up, pants down. I wrote the sensor actually not long life. But I was wrong. Fixed a little with Kinesio tape (a small guide for the Dexcom CGM sensor on can be found here) ran and runs until now everything fine.

In addition, the sensor is there relatively discreetly hand (my miniskirt days are gone) and the Enlite Sensor I'm wearing right now, stands out even under a tight trousers only minimally from. While I have no problem with it, to tell other people what I'm wearing there, but I am, for example, no "pump outside of the braces" has to show, nor the type of all sensors, catheters everywhere. Of course you can not always avoid. My hope is indeed the fact that sensors and Co are even smaller in the future. No stop! My first hope is first the fact that CGM systems are finally covered by health insurance.

My therapy has thus using CGM highly simplified, my blood sugar levels are much more stable, I understand my diabetes a lot better and can accordingly and early (!) React, the quality of life is thus extremely increased. I'm much more cavalier by the everyday and Hyper and Hypo banks may slow down early enough. Going a step easier it makes the SmartGuard New MiniMed 640G insulin pump from Medtronic. I had been here about it reported, which brings relief this. Still in Love!

And the bad experience there tomorrow ....
